Western Australian State Orienteering Championship

On Wednesday, 19 June 2013, a select group of Years 9 and 11 Outdoor Education students competed at the Western Australian State Orienteering Championship. The event was held at Jorgensen National Park, Kalamunda. All of the students were fantastic ambassadors for All Saints’ College. This was highlighted by their performances and behaviour on the day.

Year 9 students competed in pairs, navigating a 3 kilometre course, whilst Year 11 students competed individually, tackling a 3.5 kilometre course. Students used a variety of skills taught in Outdoor Education such as compass navigation, taking a bearing, thumbing the map and using prominent features on a map to help them complete the course as efficiently as possible. The following results are a pleasing reflection of the depth of students’ knowledge and their ability to apply it in pressure situations.

Pairs 15 – Course A (52 pairs competing)

2nd Callum/Braydon 36:37

4th Disura/Cale 44:03

5th Harry/Karri 44:45

7th Stuart/Adam 54:44

Pairs 15 – Course B (52 pairs competing)

1st Drew/Luca 25:41

2nd Nathan/Frazer 45:13

4th Martin/Mia 54:10

Individual 16+ (68 competitors)

2nd Tim 69:14

3rd Daniel 73:31

7th Duncan 82:31

A special mention to Madeleine (Year 9) who competed individually as her partner was absent. Madeleine showed great poise and determination to finish the course in 14th position.

Benjamin must also be congratulated for a great performance on the day, winning the Year 11 Outdoor Education category with the best time, but unfortunately was disqualified due to not completing all controls in the correct order.
