Successful first season for ASC Basketball Club

For more than 20 years, the Willetton Basketball Association (WBA) has competed with only six clubs.

The All Saints’ College Basketball Club was determined to be a part of one of the best basketball competitions in WA and lobbied to join the association.

In September last year, All Saints’ College was accepted as the WBA’s seventh club.

In their first season the club entered nine teams: three Under 10 Boys teams, two Under 12 Boys teams, one Under 14 Boys and Under 16 Boys teams, and two Girls teams – Under 12s and Under 14s.

With nine teams filled and 70 players signed up, the club was off to a great start. Parents and Year 11 students volunteered their time and expertise to train the students once a week and a Club Committee was formed.

After weeks of training sessions, the hard work paid off when three teams competed in the Finals – Under 12 Boys, Under 12 Girls and Under 14 Girls.

The Under 12 Boys and Under 14 Girls teams came out on top and secured a place in the Grand Finals which were held on Saturday, 5 April at the Willetton Basketball Courts.

Competing in their first Grand Finals, both teams had extraordinary games each winning by a single point.

College parent and Coach, Mark Connor, said the ASC Basketball Club has injected enthusiasm and spirit into the Willetton Basketball Competition in only its first year.

“During presentations for our two Grand Final winning teams, Willetton Basketball Association Junior Committee chairman, Robert Heron, announced that the All Saints’ College Basketball Club has set the bar high with our vocal support,” Mark said.

“What a great endorsement for our club which has introduced more than 70 players to basketball and now has two premiership teams that will go down in history.

“Thanks to everyone who has contributed, from the Club Committee through to players, parents and coaches. With winter season participation already up 20%, we urge the whole College community to get on board.”

Throughout the summer season, the Club hosted a number of fundraising events including an exciting visit from Perth Wildcats players, James Ennis and Drake U’u; Sausage Sizzles; and an end of season Wind-Up.
