Early Childhood Curriculum

Our Early Childhood Centre provides All Saints’ children with well-laid foundations on which to build the rest of their lives at the College, and later in the wider community. They are encouraged to become communicators, problem-solvers, critical thinkers and risk-takers, flexible in their outlook and positive, contributing members of the community. Each child is assisted to develop a positive self-respect, concern for others and an awareness of community and environmental responsibilities.

We provide a safe and nurturing environment where all our students can succeed. The cultural and social diversity of our community is honoured and celebrated within the Christian ethos. Each child is respected as an individual and encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace, so that they may build their own lifelong love of learning.

In 2013 and in subsequent years, Kindergarten children will attend All Saints’ College for four full days. The four days will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

In 2013 Pre Kindergarten will commence at All Saints College.

This will be offered each Wednesday of the academic year, commencing at 9.00 am and concluding at 3.00 pm. Children must be three years old before attending the programme.

This is an exciting initiative that is being offered by the College and we believe that it will build a strong community and provide the best entry for families, encouraging an effective and educationally rich experience for our youngest children. We also believe that by having this early contact with children, we will have a unique opportunity to effectively meet each child’s specific needs at an optimal early stage of their development.

In order to be eligible, children will need to turn 3 years old before the 30 June 2013 and may attend the program after their third birthday.

Years 3 – 6  Curriculum Information

All Saints’ College is committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum for Year 3 to Year 6 that equips children to be positive, productive and effective contributors to society. The curriculum is based on a combination of The Australian Curriculum and The Western Australian Curriculum Framework. Classroom teachers and specialist teachers provide our students with a range of experiences and disciplines which ensures they have an opportunity to collaborate, develop individual skills and be challenged.

We adopt an integrated inquiry approach to teaching and learning as we believe this empowers the students and enables them to develop thinking skills and problem solving strategies. Creativity and critical thinking are key components of the rich and varied curriculum offered with an emphasis on students becoming increasingly independent learners as they move through Years 3 to 6. We value the risks students take in their learning as we believe it is through ‘having a go’ and not being afraid to make mistakes, that students become engaged and reflective learners, able to apply their skills and knowledge to real life problems and investigations.

The study of Language, Literacy and Literature allows a focus on reading a range of text types for information and enjoyment, including author and novel studies. Students create a range of imaginative and informative texts (including narratives, persuasive writing, reports, poems, play scripts), experimenting with text structures and language features. They learn how to edit their own and others’ work using agreed criteria. Students are able to discuss ideas and explore role plays in dramatic texts, utilising their voice and body to show character. In spelling, students use a phonemic approach to explore the spellings of unfamiliar words.

In Mathematics, students are differentiated into ability groups. In each year group, there is a particular emphasis on all students having sound ‘number sense’ including competence and understanding of place value, times tables, the four operations and fractions. There is a focus on the correct use of mathematical language and collaborative investigation and problem solving.

Science allows students to develop greater understanding about the world, explore their natural curiosity and develop discipline with the use of the scientific investigative approach using the framework the 5Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate).

History provides students with many opportunities for Inquiry based learning as they investigate Australia’s Community and Remembrance, First Contacts, The Australian Colonies and Australia as a Nation.

Students are always encouraged to express themselves confidently and respectfully share their ideas and opinions with others. There are many opportunities to develop intra-personal skills and embrace further challenge through our ‘Outdoor Learning Programs’ from Year 4 upwards.

We aim to make the most of each student’s individuality to ensure they can make connections between their ability, passions and interests and the broad topics studied in class. We encourage students to set goals and reflect on their learning and teachers assess student learning to take into account an individual’s learning ability. This data assists teachers to differentiate tasks and outcomes. We provide opportunities to challenge all students and adjust the curriculum for students who experience difficulty with literacy and /or numeracy.

Information and Communication Technology is used as a tool, integrated into the curriculum through the use of Interactive Whiteboards and notebook computers from Year 3 to Year 6. ICT is used as a powerful medium to communicate, to record and analyse data and to bring the outside world into the classroom.

From Year 3 to Year 6, there is a continuity and progression of skills and concepts with clear lines of development, with the overriding emphasis on making learning enjoyable so that we engender a life-long enthusiasm and love of learning.
